2nd Mission BULGARIA

Heart Doctors have organized humanitarian missions to help populations in South Eastern Europe ( the Balkans), attacked by recent disastrous floods due to heavy and prolonged rains in the area. Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia and Bulgaria have received relief from Heart Doctors to assist flood victims in certain affected areas. As a matter of fact, a special mission was organized by a team of Heart Doctors from Thessaloniki; they managed to collect various kinds of foodstuffs, clothing and mattresses and pack them in big boxes. Two vans were loaded by that material and six Heart Doctors members participated in the mission traveling in a separate private passenger motor car. They communicated with the General Consul of Bulgaria in Thessaloniki who enthusiastically assisted by proposing the most suffering flood stricken communities in Bulgaria and by issuing the required documents to help with bureaucratic formalities and controls by the Authorities. Thus it was decided to take the relief to Asparuhovo, a municipality at the bank of Luda Kachmia river, in the wider region of Varna (north eastern Bulgaria). That village had been flooded and partly destroyed by the natural disaster with 18 dead and three children missing.

The members of the mission team were: Mrs. Popi Dimitriadou, Mrs. Evina Dimitriadou Badawi, Professor Hassan Badawi, Mrs. Parthena Kiorteve, Mr. Timos Dimitriadis and Mr. Pantelis Ziogos.

The team left Chalkidiki on the 25th of June 2014. The journey was difficult because some roads in Bulgaria could be found only on the map! The total length of the itinerary from Chalkidiki to Asparuhovo and back to Chalkidiki was 2.250 kilometers.

The team was received by the Deputy Mayor of Asparuhovo and by a lady in charge for the allocation of relief to the flood victims; the material was delivered to the responsible authorities and the mission members were taken to see the affected and destroyed areas of the village. Mrs. Evina Dimitriadou Badawi and Professor Badawi talked to journalists from local TV stations.

The Bulgarian officials and the people who received the assistance were very happy for the solidarity and love of the Greek people and thanked heartily for the relief.

The team returned to Thessaloniki on Friday, the 27th of June, 2014.

Heart Doctors express their warmest thanks to all our friends who offered foodstuffs, clothing and other useful materials for the mission; we also thank Bulgarian officials and Greeks who assisted in many ways to organize and carry out this mission.
