41st Mission BURUNDI

On Thursday the 29th of October 2015, a five-member team of "Heart Doctors" left Athens for Burundi through Istanbul, Turkey, flying with The Turkish Airlines.

The purpose of this humanitarian mission was to offer medical assistance and medication to sick populations living in remote and isolated rural communities in the province of Karusi. The local preparation and coordination of the mission was undertaken by the Governor of the province. 

The members of the team stayed at an hotel in the capital of Karusi. Every morning they visited by car a community of the province as scheduled by the coordinator; they worked there till evening and then they returned to the hotel to spend the night. The sick people gathered at local medical centers, schools or other suitable places where "Heart Doctors" arranged their improvised medical camp and received the people for examination and treatment. 

The following communities were visited (diseases are mentioned in parentheses):

1.10. 2015, Gisimbawaga:
(malaria, gastroenteritis, elephantiasis, scabies, conjunctivitis).

1.11.2015, Mutumba:
(malaria, bronchitis, parasites, gastroenteritis, conjunctivitis, skin diseases, chronic ulcers of lower limbs, lumbago, skin fungal infections, epigastralgia).

2.11.2015, Gihogazi:
(malaria, undernourishment, scabies, skin fungal infections, gastritis, ameobiasis,   conjunctivitis).

3.11.2015, Nyabikere:
(malaria, diarrhea, bronchitis, skin diseases, conjunctivitis, lumbago, arthralgia, HIV, elephantiasis, tuberculosis, psoriasis).

4.11.2015, Nyabikere:
(malaria, bronchitis, gastroenteritis, skin diseases, parasites, cachexia).

Heart Doctors express their warmest thanks to the Governor of Karuzi and the local authorities of the Province.

The team returned to Athens on Friday, the 6th of November, 2015.
